Sciatica Leg: Ditch that pain

If you are suffering from sciatica, you may be experiencing sharp or shooting pains or cramps running down your leg and/or butt.  Sciatica is annoying, painful and uncomfortable.

Take heart though because it is easily treatable.

The following sciatica treatments include icepacks or heatpacks, exercises and antiflammation medication to reduce pain.

A/  Icepacks versus Heatpacks

Now ice packs and heat packs have very opposite effects, heat packs relax muscles while the use of icepacks may shrink the inflammation yet could tighten the muscle spasm.  Go with your intuition on this one.  Do you prefer heat or cold.  Try one type for 10 minutes and monitor results.  See if the pain subsides somewhat.  If it gets worse, stop this treatment immediately.

B/  So what sort of exercise would help cure sciatica?

Gentle stretching is a good place to start.  If the pain is too severe however, this may not be a suitable starting point.  Instead you may need bed rest for a couple of days before you try this one.

1/  Lie on the floor and gently lift one leg at a time up in the air while pulling it back with your hands.

2/  Gently stretch the hamstrings which will definitely target your sciatica pain.

3/  Close your eyes and breathe into the pain.  Try to tune into the area of the pain and then intuitively move until you feel you are gently stretching the pain.

C/  Antiflammation medication is available over the counter of your local chemist and you can also get muscle relaxants for sciatica pain.  If you have nurofen or panadol that may be a good starting point.

If pain persists get it checked out by a professional.
