Information on Sciatica and Causes
The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain and possibly tingling, numbness or weakness that travels from the low back through the buttock and down the large sciatic nerve in the back of the leg. The vast majority of people who experience sciatica get better with time (usually a few weeks or months) and find pain relief with non-surgical sciatica treatment. For others, however, sciatica can be severe and debilitating.
Sciatica usually affects only one side of the lower body. Often, the pain extends from the lower back all the way through the back of the thigh and down through the leg. Depending on where the sciatic nerve is affected, the pain may also extend to the foot or toes.
Sciatica is pain that starts in the back and radiates down one of the legs. It is quite a common complaint and is sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve which runs down into the leg. The medical term is acute nerve root compression. The cause of pressure can be varied from a Slipped (Prolapsed) disk to muscle tension (Piriformis syndrome) or something less common such as a tumors, bony growths and infections.
Before reviewing specific sciatica exercises, it is first important to explain what sciatica is, as the term sciatica is often misused and its definition often misunderstood. Sciatica is a set of symptoms rather than a diagnosis in itself (meaning it does not explain the cause of the pain). Sciatica (radiculopathy) is a general term that refers to pain caused by compression or irritation of one or more nerves exiting the lower spine that make up the sciatic nerve, and there are a number of different conditions that can cause this.
Nerves are cord like structure which consist of several nerve fibres. Sciatic nerve is the largest nerve of our body which is also called as Great Nerve. It is around 2 cms in diameter. It arises from nerve (roots) plexus emerging from the sacrum (back part of hip bone). It comes out of the pelvis through greater sciatic foramen (opening) in the hip bone with piriformis muscle which unites hip joint and femur. From there it descends on the backside of the leg, deep into the gluteus muscles (buttock). It gives out branches tibial nerve and common peroneal nerve to supply medial and posterior aspect of leg.
Causes
While sciatica is most commonly a result of a disc herniation directly pressing on the nerve, any cause of irritation or inflammation of this nerve can reproduce the symptoms of sciatica. These causes include irritation of the nerve from adjacent bone, tumors, muscle, internal bleeding, infections, injury, and other causes.
A primary cause of sciatica is a herniated or bulging lower lumbar intervertebral disk that compresses one of the nerve roots before it joins the sciatic nerve. Sometimes, irritation of a branch of the sciatic nerve in the leg can be so severe as to set up a reflex pain reaction involving the entire length of the nerve. For example, if the nerve is pinched or irritated near the knee, you may feel the pain in the hip and buttock.

Sciatica Home Treatment
When looking into some sciatica home treatments to remedy sciatica problems I could just barely stomach some of concoctions that i found listed around the web. But I am sure if I was going through the pain of sciatica I would try just about anything.
Here are a few sciatica home treatments for you to try. Please note that I do not suffer from sciatica symptoms so I have not had a chance to try any of these sciatica home treatments. Seeing as sciatica is a symptom of other ailments what I have listed here are temporary solutions to dealing with the symptoms of sciatica and not the root problem causing the sciatica.
Combining potato and celery juice together is said to produce relief from sciatica related pain syndromes. For this juice blend to be truly effected it is said that you should be drinking at least 10 ounces a day of this sciatica home treatment. Adding some carrot and beetroot juice will help to fortify the mixture and make it taste more pleasant for those of you thinking that you would never be able to stomach the original two flavors by themselves. If you still can not stomach this mixture and find the taste displeasing then I would have to relay a suggestion I noticed a while back about drinking celery tea throughout the day instead.
Another juice that you want to consider for a sciatica home treatment is a juice made with elderberries. This can be drank in either the form of juice or tea, making it a convenient choice for just about anyone. The way the elderberries work is that they contain properties that help to relax and stimulate the muscles. This is beneficial in treating sciatica symptoms.
To get relief from aches and pains as well as improve circulation around your body you can try eating raw garlic or taking garlic supplements along with other kinds of supplements. Taking Vitamin B1 or a B Complex supplement will help to reap the full benefits that garlic can provide in treating sciatica symptoms. Garlic is believed to be so effective as a sciatica home treatment because it contains anti-oxidant properties. It also helps to provide the body with warmth and energy.
In conjunction with using the sciatica home treatment methods listed above, you should be looking to improve your general health overall if you suffer from sciatica. With some form of exercise and a proper healthy diet you can ensure that you will be able to meet your health goals in the future. Everything that i listed above is natural and can be found by anyone.
On the subject of miracle pills for sciatica home treatment. If you are looking for that miracle all in one pill to help take away the pain and symptoms associated with sciatica, i would suggest talking to your doctor or specialist before trying some of these miracle cures. I am not saying that none of them work, because I would not know, but I am saying that having a medical second opinion before taking some of these sciatica home treatment pills would be a wise idea.

Information on Sciatica
So you have been diagnosed with sciatica and even though your doctor explained to you about the condition, you have come looking for a bit more information on sciatica.
Lets start with the basic question on most peoples mind, what is sciatica? The general term used for pain being felt along the sciatic nerve is sciatica. This pain is usually described by patients as a sharp electric shocking type pain that starts in the buttocks and travels down the back of the thigh and leg. Most often caused by a herniated disk, there are also other causes. When diagnosing sciatica symptoms a MRI scan is most often taken to help with this process. If your MRI shows a herniated disk make sure to get referred to a spine specialist. A spine specialist can look over your X-rays and be able to recommend the proper course of treatment.
Some signs and symptoms of sciatica are:
A cramping sensation of the thigh
Shooting pains from the buttock, down the leg
Tingling, or pins-and-needles sensations in the legs and thighs
A burning sensation in the thigh
Maneuvers such as squatting, coughing or sneezing worsen the sciatica symptoms that the patient is having. The cause of the worsened sciatica symptoms is the jerking motion adding pressure that is being placed around the nerve.
I mentioned earlier that sciatica is not always caused by a herniated or slipped disk. Some other causes of Sciatica could be:
Iliolumbar Syndrome: This is simply inflammation or a tear of the ililumbar ligament. This is the back of your pelvis and it extends from the spine to the iliac crest.
Lumbar Facet Joint Syndrome: The pain coming from the joints in your back with this particular symptom can cause Sciatica like symptoms along with pain and discomfort. Just like the knee and elbow can get inflamed and cause pain, the facet joint is like any other joint in your body and follows these same rules.
Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: This is the narrowing of the spinal canal causing sciatica type symptoms. Disk problems and arthritis of the spine can cause this narrowing.
Piriformis Syndrome: Simply put this is pain caused by the Piriformis muscle that may be in spasm, inflamed, or irritated. Located in you buttock and laying right on top of the sciatic nerve as it exits the spine down your leg. When this muscle is inflamed, irritated or in spasm it will cause pressure on the sciatic nerve causing the sciatica like symptoms.
Sacroiliitis: The joint where your hip meets your spine is called the sacroiliac joint. When your sacroiliac joint becomes inflamed it is known as sacroiliitis. Sciatica type syndromes can be felt due to inflammation caused by arthritis or traumatic injury. Anesthetic injections or anti-inflammatory medications can take away the pain.
Being extremely uncommon in younger patients sciatica can still affect most anyone. Most people who suffer from sciatica are in the age range of thirty to fifty. Most often back injury or over exerting the back will bring on a sudden onset of sciatica.
