Sciatica Treatment: What are some basic treatments for me?

A mixture of rest and gentle stretching is recommended.  Avoid lifting heavy things and just take things a bit easier.  Try hot or cold compresses on the painful areas and see if you can find a friend or family member to give you a massage where the pain is causing you grief.  If the pain is in the butt cheek you may have to pay someone to give you a massage to avoid possible embarrassment.

Some people try acupuncture, acupressure, osteopathy or chiropractic treatments in efforts to greatly reduce the pain.  This may or may not work.  Use your intuition to guide you as to what treatment feels right for you.

Paracetamol is a good first port of call as sciatica treatment as this takes the edge off the sharp pain.  Anti-Flammatory medications are often prescribed for this condition.  There are also natural remedies for sciatica that a health professional can advise you on.

Ways to avoid sciatica pain in the future would be stretch daily to avoid jarring.  Sit up straight and be mindful of having a good posture at all times.  Keeping fit and healthy is good.  Aerobic fitness keeps the bones strong, keeps you healthy and improves flexibility.

Make sure when you lift that you do this safely.  Always bend your knees when lifting while keeping back straight.

Are there any home remedies for Sciatica?

I did some research online, and I’m convinced I have Sciatica in some form. Every so often, the left side of my back (kind of near the tailbone area) hurts. I walk like an old lady, and when I step on my left foot, this shooting pain runs right down my leg. This has been going on for almost two years, on and off.

Anyways, I can’t afford a doctor right now, so I was wondering if there are any home remedies for this. I know there are some exercises you can do, but what else? Has anyone else had this condition? What did you do?

Thanks so much!

How do I get relief from Sciatica ?

Whether you are experiencing a tingling sensation, pins and needles or pain down one side of your body, there are effective treatments to manage sciatica.

Spend a good 10-15 minutes stretching gently.  This will make a world of difference to your pain.  Get down on the floor, close your eyes and just tune into your body.  As you lie there, feel the pain and intuitively flex, bend and stretch in order to release the sciatica pain.    In your mind say “release” and allow yourself to tune in to the sensation.

If you could see the sciatica, would it be hot, cold, dull, bright ?  What emotion would it be ?  Anger, frustration, annoyance?  If your sciatica could talk, what do you think it would say to you?  I know this sounds funny but our body does have an infinite intelligence and if you listen to your intuition you may receive some insight into your condition.

Moving helps.  Sit for no longer than 30 minutes then get up and move around.  Get someone to give you a gentle massage to help you get rid of the pain that may be aching around your butt cheek. That can be so damn painful.

Drink plenty of water and be gentle with yourself.  So often we beat ourselves up instead of supporting ourselves emotionally.  This condition will pass even though it doesn’t feel like it at the time.   There are plenty of ways to manage sciatica, self help is a good place to start I reckon.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica, (also known as sciatic neuritis), is an aching health condition that affects certain areas of your body.

The sciatic nerve which runs off your spinal cord, has been pressured in some way. Perhaps you twisted suddenly or pinched a nerve causing a pain that may start in your lower back or hip and then move down your buttock, possibly traveling to the back part of your thigh(s) and even into your feet.

The sciatic nerve has somehow become irritated which may show up in symptoms such as pins and needles, an annoying pain or perhaps a numb feeling in a certain area of the body, e.g.: one buttock.

It is common to only feel pain down one side of the body. The degree of pain associated with sciatica will vary from person to person. Where one person may have an excruciating throbbing pain down his leg, another person may feel numbness in his bum.

Mild pain may show up as cramping in some area, or there could be a slow onset of the condition. Most people experience sciatica at some point in their life but it is more common in age groups ranging from 20-60 years.

Over time, aging, and general wear of the body systems, an injury or twisting of the upper torso may cause a compression of the sciatic nerve. As the sciatic nerve is compressed, muscle spasms may occur to bring on the symptoms associated with sciatica.

There is an increased likelihood of developing sciatica if you are overweight or pregnant.
